Caribbean Island-Hopping Across the ABC

Sea

Embarking on a springtime Caribbean odyssey with Silversea felt like returning to a beloved classic with a fresh twist. This March, we set sail on Silver Moon for our second ultra-luxury cruise through these turquoise waters (our first was aboard Silver Dawn, from San Juan to Bridgetown). Silversea’s intimate all-suite ships and all-inclusive offerings made it effortless to blend relaxation and adventure – every detail from fine wines to enriching shore excursions was impeccably arranged. Our week-long itinerary carried us from Barbados to the “ABC” islands and back, touching five distinctive ports. Rather than focus on the ship, this journey was all about exploring destinations in style. Here’s how the voyage unfolded.

Day 1: Bridgetown, Barbados – Embarkation in Paradise

Stepping into the warm embrace of Bridgetown, we immediately felt the easy island spirit that Barbados exudes. The capital’s historic streets – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – set the scene as we boarded Silver Moon in the late afternoon. Silversea’s crew greeted us with a flute of champagne, setting the tone of this voyage across the ABC islands.

Day 2: Bequia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines – Beach Bliss & Royal Legends

Waking up to Admiralty Bay glistening in the morning sun, the tiny island of Bequia welcomed us with open arms. Our included excursion introduced this Grenadine gem’s charm: we drove past hillside hamlets and learned of Bequia’s seafaring heritage before enjoying a blissful morning at Lower Bay Beach. The soft golden sand and gentle, crystal-clear waters made for a perfect start to the day.

Later, we wandered through Port Elizabeth, Bequia’s capital village, where colorful wooden shops lined the waterfront. From there, we followed a trail to Princess Margaret Beach – once known as Tony Gibbons Beach – renamed after the princess swam here during a 1950s visit. The story added a royal touch to an already magical setting. With gentle waves lapping the shore and lush headlands framing the cove, it was a moment of simple luxury and quiet beauty.

Day 3: At Sea – Relaxation & Refinement Onboard

A day at sea aboard Silver Moon was a welcome pause. We spent the morning on the pool deck with cappuccinos in hand, admiring the endless horizon. A cooking demo at S.A.L.T. Kitchen (stands for Sea and Land Taste, a unique Silversea offering that delivers an immersive culinary program based on the region of travel) offered a taste of Caribbean flavors. From gourmet dining to peaceful corners in the Observation Lounge, it was a day of pure indulgence and reflection.

Day 4: Aruba – Desert Wonders and Beachside Glamour

In Aruba, the landscape shifted dramatically – cacti, wind-sculpted divi-divi trees, and rugged coasts defined the terrain. Our included excursion took us to the Natural Bridge ruins and the smaller Baby Natural Bridge, where waves carved stunning formations into the limestone. We climbed among the Casibari Rock Formations, discovering panoramic views and desert-like beauty.

We stopped at Studio Murano Art, watched artisans shape molten glass, and later dipped our toes into the island’s famed waters. We also visited the elegant St. Regis Aruba and new Iberostar resort – both promising entries into the luxury Caribbean scene (reviews to follow). Aruba revealed itself as a blend of wild beauty and modern glamour – an island of contrast and charm.

Day 5: Bonaire – Wild Coastlines and Living History

Quiet and pristine, Bonaire greeted us with flamingos at Goto Lake, rugged cliffs, and cactus-dotted roads. We explored Kralendijk and the historic village of Rincon, then wound through Washington Slagbaai National Park, where the wild coast met untamed nature.

The island’s southern salt flats shimmered pink and white, and the humble slave huts by the shore stood as solemn reminders of a difficult past. These small, stark shelters were sobering to stand inside – a history worth remembering. In the afternoon, we swam in a nearby natural pool with tropical fish dancing around us, then watched the sunset from the ship. Bonaire’s honesty and natural beauty left a lasting impression – raw, real, and unforgettable.

Day 6: Curaçao – Caves, Culture, and Caribbean Color

We entered Curaçao beneath the soaring Queen Juliana Bridge, with pastel-colored Willemstad shining in the morning light. Our day began in the Hato Caves, where ancient petroglyphs told stories of Arawak tribes and runaway slaves who once found shelter in the cavern’s depths. At the Curaçao Museum, we admired colonial furniture and island art, then crossed into the vibrant Punda district. A tasting at the Chobolobo Liqueur Factory introduced us to the island’s famous Blue Curaçao, sweet and citrusy.

Willemstad’s iconic Queen Emma Bridge, affectionately known as the “Swinging Old Lady”, is a floating pontoon bridge that connects the historic districts of Punda and Otrobanda. Built in 1888, this unique structure swings open laterally to allow ships to pass through St. Anna Bay, offering both a functional crossing and a magnificent view of colorful buildings lining up the shore.

Day 8: Bridgetown, Barbados – Journey’s End

Back where we began, Bridgetown welcomed us once more. As we disembarked, we took a final moment to appreciate a week filled with natural wonders, history, and effortless luxury. From the sailor’s haven of Bequia to Curaçao’s kaleidoscope of culture, each island revealed something special.

Silversea once again delivered a seamless blend of exploration and elegance. The joy of luxury cruising isn’t just in the fine linens or world-class wine lists (though those are lovely). It’s in the ability to step off the ship and straight into a place’s soul – and then return, perfectly pampered, to reflect on it all.

Until next time – bon voyage.
